Message from E-MRS President
Giuseppina Padeletti

The 2026 E-MRS Spring Meeting was held in Strasbourg from May 24 to 29. It was a successful edition,
confirming a positive trend (5% more attendees than in 2025) that shows continued recovery after the
pandemic. Participation encompassed not only European countries but also those from Asia, the Americas,
Canada, Australia, and the African continent, demonstrating the truly international character of E-MRS.

Special thanks for this success is owed to the conference cochairs, the symposium organizers, and the
E-MRS organizing committee, who are the pillars of this event and ensure its smooth running.

It should be added that several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) are active internationally with
other societies, with whom we have jointly established synergistic actions to promote research and
respond to challenges in the most strategic sectors on the global scene. This year, during the E-MRS
Spring Meeting, an MoU with MRS-Japan was signed.

Another very important aspect of this edition, and one that should be emphasized, is that 43% of
registrations were from students. This is undoubtedly a very significant figure, demonstrating the
broad participation of young people — the younger generations representing the future of research,
science, and of the world.

E-MRS cares deeply for those young generations because we believe strongly that, in addition to representing the above, they also embody the hope for a more cultured and just world. In concrete terms, for years, E-MRS has implemented initiatives to motivate and promote young researchers.

We do this through the E-MRS Young Researcher Awards, intended to recognise and honour graduate students whose academic achievements and current materials research display a high level of excellence, showing promising and significant aptitude in materials science research.

This year, 2026, the Spring Meeting’s plenary session was opened with another important prize, acknowledging leading researchers under 40. Formerly the EU40 Prize, beginning with 2026, it will be referred to as the Paul Siffert Award, in honour of our longtime General Secretary Paul Siffert. He founded E-MRS in 1983. This Award honours young researchers under 40 whose work has made a major impact on European Materials Science. It is important to note that this award is not restricted to European citizens, but requires that the research to be honoured was conducted at European institutions, universities, and industries.

The Inside E-MRS World newsletter will contain further details on the various initiatives undertaken, and I would therefore like to conclude this message with an optimistic vision for the future of the EMRS as a place where brilliant minds can meet and constructively contribute to shaping our world and our future with the open-mindedness, respect for the thoughts of the others, and creativity that characterize the world of science.
