Cultural Heritage: materials, methods, practice and innovation

E-MRS hosts the 13th Symposium in a series dedicated to Cultural Heritage within the Spring Meeting Conferences. The Symposium intends to be a platform for scientific knowledge exchange and dynamic dialogue between Europe and the global community, exploring the rich tapestry of our shared heritage.

Scope:

This symposium focuses on the scientific investigation of cultural heritage materials and transferring that knowledge into conservation practice and innovation. It aims to highlight the contribution of materials research to the understanding, preservation, and sustainable management of heritage objects, structures, and environments.

By bridging analytical science, conservation methodologies, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the symposium invites researchers to explore how materials, their properties, and their transformation over time shape our approaches to heritage preservation. Contributions are encouraged from both fundamental and applied perspectives, with particular interest in work that integrates traditional methods with emerging technologies and strategies.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Characterisation of historical, archaeological, and artistic materials
  • Mechanisms of alteration, degradation, and environmental impact
  • Design and evaluation of conservation materials and treatments
  • Scientific approaches to preventive conservation and monitoring
  • Digital tools, imaging techniques, and data-driven methodologies
  • Case studies linking research with conservation practice
  • Innovative, sustainable, and climate-resilient approaches to heritage preservation

The symposium will bring together materials scientists, conservators, engineers, and heritage professionals to discuss current research, share methodologies, and promote new collaborations that may advance the field of cultural heritage through a materials-based perspective.

Hot topics to be covered by the symposium:

Characterisation of heritage materials; degradation and conservation processes; development of compatible and sustainable treatments; multi-scale and in situ analytical methods; digital tools for monitoring and modelling; climate impact and risk assessment; authenticity and provenance studies; geoarchaeological and archaeometric approaches; integration of materials science with cultural heritage policy, management, and societal engagement.
