LSolid state batteries: materials, processing and advanced characterization
This symposium aims to bring together researchers working in the development of solid-state batteries. Contributions may comprise research on materials, strategies for interface optimization, innovative processing routes, theory and modelling, and novel in-situ/operando or other advanced characterization techniques.
Scope:
The push for a complete electrification of future societies requires of urgent technological developments. While lithium batteries are currently the champion technology for electrochemical energy storage, the necessity of deploying their use to new applications, especially electric vehicles, imply drastic performance enhancements that will hardly be reached by further optimization of current liquid electrolyte-based cells. Therefore, huge efforts are being devoted globally to achieve the necessary advances in energy densities, durability, and safety.
In this scenario, solid-state batteries (SSBs) are called to be this breakthrough, as they make possible energy dense bipolar architectures, enable the use of lithium metal or silicon anodes (and even anodeless approaches), provide fast charging and high-power output capabilities, and reduce the generation of dendrites and the associated safety issues. To make SSBs a reality, still many obstacles must be overcome, which require the joint efforts of the community with a polyhedric research in topics like design of new materials (solid electrodes and electrolytes), development of new processing routes, electrode/electrolyte interface stability, simulation and modeling and deep understanding through novel advanced characterization techniques (e.g. in-situ/operando).
The strong impulse of the society and the subsequent interest raised in the scientific community on this field is evidenced by the more than 15.000 scientific works published in the last 10 years, which have multiplied by a factor 10 since 2024 (source Scopus).
