Controlling and Measuring at the Interface: Smart Materials for Sensing, Catalysis and Energy

Interfaces govern processes and performance in advanced materials. This symposium focuses on controlling and probing interfacial phenomena using smart materials and advanced analytical approaches (in situ and OPERANDO) for sensing, catalysis, and energy applications, while blinking at their modeling.

Scope:

Interfaces play a decisive role in determining the performance of modern materials systems, particularly in sensing, catalysis, and energy technologies. From charge transfer at oxide surfaces to molecular interactions in functional coatings, the ability to understand, probe, and control interfacial processes is essential for enabling next-generation materials and devices supporting the green and digital transitions.

This symposium brings together an interdisciplinary community at the intersection of smart materials, advanced analytical techniques, and computational modeling to address emerging challenges in interfacial science. Emphasis will be placed on systems where functionality arises from interface-driven phenomena, including hybrid organic–inorganic materials, nanostructured oxides, low-dimensional systems, and bio-inspired functional materials.

A central focus will be on state-of-the-art analytical approaches, probing interfaces with high spatial, temporal, and chemical resolution. These include advanced optical, vibrational, and electron-based spectroscopies, as well as operando and in situ techniques that enable real-time monitoring under working conditions.

Theoretical and computational methodologies—from density functional theory (DFT) to multiscale simulations and data-driven approaches—will be as well highlighted as key enablers for interpreting complex interfacial phenomena and accelerating materials discovery.

The symposium will further address strategies for engineering interfaces through molecular design, surface functionalization, and nanoscale structuring, with targeted applications in chemical and biological sensing, heterogeneous and photocatalysis, and energy technologies such as photovoltaics, batteries, and light-emitting devices.

By integrating experimental, theoretical, and data-driven approaches, the symposium aims to foster cross-disciplinary dialogue and contribute to the development of sustainable, high-performance materials systems.
