ZDecoding Interfacial Charging in Organic and Conjugated Polymers at the Biointerface
This symposium aims to explore and elucidate the physico-chemical processes occurring at the interface between electrolytes, living counterparts and conjugated polymers, focusing on the fundamental principles governing these effects.
Scope:
This symposium aims at providing a comprehensive and interdisciplinary overview of the fundamental mechanisms governing the interface between biological environments and organic materials, with the goal of advancing next-generation bioelectronic, biomimetic, and soft functional systems. The physico-chemical mechanisms at the biotic–abiotic interface (electrolyte and biological environment) will be discussed, focusing particularly on photogenerated charge dynamics, (photo)electrochemical doping/dedoping processes, polymerization in vitro and in vivo in biologically relevant conditions. Emphasis will be placed on ion diffusion, hydration effects, and microstructural rearrangements that govern electron–ion coupling, as well as phase separation, ion transport, and volumetric capacitance. Additional key themes include interfacial swelling phenomena, biofouling mechanisms and the behavior of (bio)degradable polymers in transient and sustainable technologies. The symposium will also explore advanced soft materials such as electrically active hydrogels, iongels, and eutectogels, highlighting their roles in mediating biointerface functionality.
By bringing together expertise from physics, materials science, chemistry, and biology the symposium aims to advance a unified understanding of interfacial processes ruling the function of organic materials in bioelectronic systems, while identifying common principles, open challenges, and future research directions.
Hot topics to be covered by the symposium:
- Novel conjugated polymers for bioelectronics
- Functionalized (conducting or responsive) Hydrogel, Iongels and Eutectogels
- Hybrid bio-interfaces
- Photo- or Electro- polymerization in vitro and in vivo
