Emerging Materials for Integrated Photonics and Optoelectronics: From Integration to Devices

This symposium brings together emerging functional materials and their integration into photonic and optoelectronic devices. It focuses on monolithic and heterogeneous integration, device functionality and emerging applications in linear, nonlinear and quantum photonics.

Scope:

Emerging functional materials are enabling major advances in photonics and optoelectronics by introducing optical properties and device functionalities beyond those available in conventional platforms. This symposium focuses on experimental research on their integration into photonic and optoelectronic devices, emphasizing material–device compatibility, optical functionality, nanofabrication, and device-level characterization.

The scope covers a wide range of material systems, including functional oxides, hybrid and complex materials, low-dimensional layers, rare-earth-doped materials, and multilayer heterostructures.Emphasis is given to their monolithic and heterogeneous integration on silicon and silicon-nitride platforms, where interface control, optical-mode engineering, and scalable processing are essential for achieving reliable device performance. Contributions demonstrating functional integration into photonic circuits are especially encouraged. The symposium welcomes studies connecting material properties with propagation loss, optical confinement, efficiency, tunability, and stability.

From an application-driven perspective, the symposium highlights experimental advances in active and reconfigurable integrated photonics, including modulators, switches, emitters, detectors, resonators, nonlinear devices, metamaterial structures, and emerging quantum and neuromorphic photonic systems.

By bringing together experimentalists from materials science, physics, and engineering, the symposium aims to foster cross-disciplinary discussions and stimulate new collaborations focused on translating emerging material functionalities into next-generation integrated photonic and optoelectronic technologies.

Hot topics to be covered by the symposium:

  • Interface and defect engineering, scalable deposition techniques, and nanoscale patterning for high-performance photonics and optoelectronics.
  • Applications in integrated photonics and optoelectronics including data processing, integrated photonics, neuromorphic computing, and emerging quantum technologies.
  • Active photonic devices: modulators, switches, emitters, detectors and tunable resonators
  • Rare-earth, III–V, oxide, 2D and hybrid materials for on-chip optical functionality
