Engineering 2D van der Waals Materials: Design, Interface Control and Emergent Functionalities

Exploiting two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials and heterostructures is a key frontier in next-generation technologies. This symposium focuses on interface-driven design and engineering to enable emergent functionalities, bridging atomic-scale engineering with innovative and scalable device applications.

Scope:

This symposium will address recent advances in  physics-guided design,  bottom-up synthesis and functional integration of 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials and their heterostructures, with a strong emphasis on emergent functionalities. Contributions are invited across  fundamental and applied materials-physics research, encompassing experimental studies, theoretical modeling and data-driven and AI-assisted approaches. Special emphasis will be placed on linking  underlying physical mechanisms to scalable and technologically relevant implementations.

Particular attention will be given to surface and interface engineering, interlayer coupling and defect and strain tuning. Topics will include moiré superlattices and twistronics, correlated electronic states, as well as topological phases and other quantum phenomena emerging from engineered interfaces. The symposium will also cover electronic junctions, band alignment and tunnel barriers, together with  bottom-up synthesis and layer-by-layer assembly strategies, encapsulation and the use of graphene and related materials as functional electrodes, with an emphasis on controllable and reproducible architectures.Interdisciplinary studies at the 2D/bio interface will also be highlighted.

Further themes include the investigation of electronic, optoelectronic and excitonic properties, as well as spintronic effects and magnetic 2D systems, in addition to 2D-bio interfacial charge transport and 2D bioelectronics. Hybrid molecular and organic–inorganic heterostructures integrated with 2D materials will also be considered, particularly for their interfacial physics. Advanced characterization techniques, alongside multiscale theoretical approaches and emerging data-driven methodologies, will be highlighted for their role in understanding, predicting and optimizing  physical behavior.

Finally, the symposium will emphasize progress toward device integration and applications, focusing on scalability, reliability and performance in next-generation technologies,  including sensing, photodetection, quantum devices and biophysical platforms, alongside compatibility with existing platforms. By fostering interdisciplinary exchange, this symposium aims to bridge fundamental insights with technological implementation and accelerate innovation in the field.
