Materials for Electronics & Photonics
QNano Engineered Materials and Thin Films: Syntheses, Structure–Properties & Applications
This symposium gathers communities of surface engineering of thin films and nanomaterials focusing on advanced technologies to design thin films, nanostructures and functional surfaces. Growth, nucleation and (nano)structuring processes, coupling theory (including modeling and simulation) with advanced approaches.
Scope:
Thin films, surface engineering, and nanoparticles are essential to modern technologies. They enable advanced performance in electronics, energy, healthcare, and transportation. Their strong industrial relevance continues to stimulate innovation and investment. Current technologies often struggle to meet durability and sustainability targets simultaneously. While integrated, multidisciplinary design approaches are already being implemented, they now require urgent reinforcement.
Researchers play a key role in meeting increasingly stringent material requirements. They develop innovative synthesis, characterization, and modeling strategies aiming at precisely controlling over synthesis, modification and engineering strategies combined with advanced characterization techniques and simulation. Their efforts focus on finding strategies to tailor properties and maximize efficiency relative to raw material usage. Many of these developments rely on physical and chemical vapor deposition techniques (PVD, CVD, ALD, MBE, 3D printing techniques, sol‑gel, spray, plating…). Interest in thin films, nanomaterials, and nanocomposites continues to grow, supported by advanced and in-situ and operando probes that correlate composition and architecture with performance. Understanding growth mechanisms, interfacial phenomena, and structure–function relationships relative to properties and resulting performance remains central.
The growing interest in this field is evidenced by Web of Science data from 5,600 published papers in 1995 to 100,000 in 2025, corresponding to an average growth of more than 3,000 additional papers per year over three decades. Such continuous acceleration highlights the strategic importance and timeliness of a dedicated EMRS symposium. The symposium will highlight recent advances in both fundamental and applied aspects of thin films and nanomaterials, supporting progress across a wide range of fields, including electronics, spintronics, (bio)sensing, biomedicine, catalysis, energy harvesting and storage, environmental remediation, and pharmaceuticals. The proposed symposium will foster high-quality discussions among experts from diverse backgrounds. This exchange of complementary knowledge is essential for developing next-generation materials for our future technologies.
