2D-MATTERS: 2D Materials for Advanced Technologies – From Synthesis to Application

2D-MATTERS is designed to provide a cross-disciplinary discussion of 2D materials, motivated by their growing impact across different technologies and industrial implementation. It aims to connect top-down synthesis, functionalization, scalable integration, and emerging applications.

Scope:

The objective of this symposium is to bring together scientists in STEM disciplines and industry who work on the chemistry, processing, and application of 2D materials, with particular emphasis on top-down synthesis and scalable production.

Research on 2D materials continues to grow because of their exceptional electronic, optical, mechanical, thermal, chemical, and interfacial properties, which can be tuned by controlling composition, defects, surface chemistry, morphology, and structure. Top-down approaches offer versatile routes to access and tailor 2D materials from their precursors while controlling these features. At the same time, major challenges remain in understanding how processing conditions and surface chemistry govern stability, dispersibility, processability, scalability and sustainable manufacturing. Addressing these challenges is essential to move beyond proof-of-concept studies toward robust, industry-relevant applications.

Contributions will address established and emerging materials, including graphene and related post-graphene materials, transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), MXenes, boron nitride, and other emergent layered systems. The symposium will explore their transformation from bulk precursors into functional architectures, including films, membranes, coatings, composites, inks, and electrodes. Applications will span energy harvesting, storage and conversion, catalysis, electromagnetic absorption and shielding, and other technologies.

The symposium will provide a forum to discuss how advances in the synthesis and processing of these materials can translate into improved performance, reliability, scalability, and sustainability of 2D-material-based technologies. Discussion will cover the chemistry, materials science, and engineering aspects governing their production and integration into functional systems while also considering industrial requirements, data-driven discovery, and environmentally responsible processing.

Invited, oral, and poster contributions, including industrial perspectives, will provide a timely forum for defining future directions in the field. Selected contributions will be considered for publication in FlatChem and 2D Materials (IOP).
