FFSpin Polarization in Molecular and Hybrid Systems: From Mechanisms to Control
The rapidly growing interest in spin polarization in molecular and hybrid systems stems from its relevance across a broad range of scientific disciplines and emerging technologies. Particularly intriguing opportunities arise from the interplay between spin, molecular structure and/or chirality, electronic states, and electron dynamics. For example, transient electronic or nuclear spin order exceeding equilibrium spin polarization, i.e., hyperpolarization, has enabled tremendous advances in magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Spintronic devices benefit from spin-polarization mechanisms such as triplet-generation, spin pumping, spin accumulation and filtering at interfaces, while chiral molecules and materials offer new possibilities for controlling spin through chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS). Moreover, control over spin states and their dynamics can influence transport, optical responses and chemical reactions, opening opportunities in spintronics, chiroptics, spin-dependent photophysics, and (photo)catalysis.
This symposium aims to provide a discussion platform for scientists from different disciplines working on spin polarization in molecular and hybrid systems, spanning fundamental mechanisms, materials design, theory and modelling, characterization, and applications.
This symposium will focus on:
- Materials and spinterface engineering: material classes supporting spin polarization and/or chiral functionalities, including molecular magnets, chiral molecules and molecular assemblies, chiral hybrid materials such as hybrid perovskites, hybrid 2D materials, materials for thermally activated delayed fluorescence, proteins, polymers, and related molecular and hybrid systems;
- Mechanisms of spin polarization and spin–chirality coupling: photoexcitation, charge and spin transport, spin pumping and accumulation, dynamic nuclear polarization, chiral-induced spin selectivity, spin–orbit and exchange interactions, chirality transfer, and coupling between structural, electronic, optical, and spin degrees of freedom;
- Theory and modelling: electronic-structure and atomistic modelling, spin-dependent transport and dynamics, spin–orbit and exchange interactions, excited-state and spin–phonon phenomena, chiral electronic and vibrational states, chiroptical responses including circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence, and multiscale approaches connecting microscopic mechanisms with experimentally measurable spin and optical responses;
- Characterization of spin polarization, chirality, and dynamics: magnetic resonance methods, transport and magnetotransport measurements, optical, chiroptical and magneto-optical spectroscopy, and local-probe techniques;
- Applications: magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, magnetic sensing, spintronic and chiral optoelectronic devices, organic light-emitting and photovoltaic devices, quantum information technologies, spin- and chirality-assisted photophysics and photocatalysis, and emerging spin-based technologies.
Overall, this symposium will advance fundamental understanding, methodology, and applications related to the generation, characterization, and control of spin polarization and its interplay with molecular structure and/or chirality in molecular and hybrid systems, while fostering collaboration across this highly dynamic and interdisciplinary research area.
